Jake is Reader in Criminology at Sheffield Hallam University. He primarily conducts research in the field of probation and community sanctions with a particular focus on the intersection between policy and practice. In recent years has undertaken research on people who die whilst under probation supervision, the emotional labour of probation practice, the impact of inspection on probation and the use of community hubs to deliver probation. He teaches modules on punishment, prisons and probation. Prior to entering academia, he worked in various roles with people under probation supervision such as housing support, drugs support and employment/training advice.
